Upcycled t-shirt cat… Meow!

Are you excited? You should be! I’ve got an exciting post for you today! Not only am I getting back with my Silhouette Challenge friends to bring you lots of fun fabric and apparel Silhouette projects, we are giving away an awesome crafty tool that most of us do not have in our arsenal… a heat press! Now you are excited, right?

Before we get to the most exciting stuff, let’s start with some backstory. My Crazy Girl is obsessed with our cat, Cameron (yes, after Duke’s Cameron Indoor Stadium)… our old, cranky, and generally hermit-like cat. She will corner and chase that poor little kitty repeating “cat! cat! cat!” or more recently, “meow! meow! meow!” The poor cat knows she shouldn’t scratch or try to bite Crazy Girl, but she doesn’t exactly know what she should do to rid herself of her little “friend”.

To try to help Cameron out, I thought I might give Crazy Girl a toy cat to torment. We have half-a-gazillion dog toys in our house, but no cats somehow. Instead of buying another stuffed animal, I thought I would make one for free. I ended up with the cutest upcycled feline-friend for Crazy Girl.

The theme for this Silhouette Challenge is fabric and apparel. I didn’t make any apparel. But I did start with some. An old t-shirt. Btw, please excuse the less-than-ideal pictures of the process, due to some sick kiddos and a little poor planning, I ended up doing this in the dark, and taking the pictures with my phone because my big camera was in the room with a sleeping Crazy Girl.

Before we cut this shirt up, let me take a second and say Go Duke! 2010 was a special year. It was the last year I got to see the team play in Cameron as a student (I got my Ph.D. in December 2009), we saw them win the ACC tourney in Greensboro, and most memorably, they won the national title. This may not be Duke’s year, but we will be rooting ’til the end in this house.

Anyhoo, this t-shirt was in the upcycle pile, and I love the non-heathered charcoal color. So, I designed a upcycled t-shirt cat to make with it. You can download the pattern here.

I printed it out (it takes at least 2 sheets of paper), cut it out and taped together a pattern, then pinned it to the bottom of my t-shirt. I cut around the pattern leaving about 1/4 inch excess through both sides of the t-shirt, giving me two cat pieces.

Next, I got out my Silhouette Cameo for the eyes, whiskers and heart. I cut the cat’s features out of scraps of heat-transfer vinyl (HTV for those in-the-know) I had on hand, you can download my cut file here. Then, I weeded them out and ironed them on the front piece of the cat. To use an iron to apply HTV, you have to cover your project with a parchment paper or a piece of scrap fabric (like a piece of cut-up t-shirt), push down hard and hold your hot iron on your project for at least 15 seconds or so. It is a little work. If you win a heat press, that is a different story!

Once the upcycled t-shirt cat had a face, it was time to sew him up. I simply lined the two pieces back up, pinned them together and carefully sewed around the cat with contrasting white thread and a 1/4 seam allowance, leaving a hole in the cat’s butt to stuff it. Then I filled my upcycled t-shirt cat with fiberfill (also upcycled from a cushion my dog distroyed). I suggest stuffing the tail and ears first, then filling in the rest. I wrestled the cat into my sewing machine to sew up the hole.

I love the raw edges and simple design of this upcycled t-shrit cat. The bright white features and pink heart jump off the charcoal background and make it fun and modern. Part of me wants to make a whole menagerie, the other part of me doesn’t have anywhere to put a menagerie of upcycled stuffed toys.upcycledCatSquare

I gave it to Crazy Girl the next day. I think she likes it.
